Highlights

Martha Jefferson Hospital built a new 176-bed replacement hospital on an 84-acre site at the base of Monticello in Charlottesville. The new facility’s array of services includes an all-digital diagnostic imaging department, on-site anatomic and clinical laboratories, and a cancer center with two True-Beam linear accelerators. A key new functional element is the combining of the patient prep/recovery bays as shared between the eight operating rooms and six vascular interventional and cardiac catheterization suites.

Korbel’s planning scope began in 2007 with a complete inventory of equipment and furnishings of the existing hospital facility and off-site buildings. Korbel held many rounds of departmental user review meetings, most in tandem with the architects and other consultants. Seven years of department capital budgets (2007-2013) were planned in conjunction with the Project equipment budget. Korbel provided equipment placements for the architectural construction documents, as well as 3D equipment blocks for room renderings during the design phase.

In 2009, the project transitioned into procurement phase and Korbel was retained for additional scope to define equipment procurement packages and track budget-versus-actual variances. The new facility opened in August 2011, and it was honored as the Most Beautiful Hospital in America in the Soliant 2012 Top 20 Survey.
